Market-Specific Branding

Greeting the eldest person in the room first is a great sign of respect in the Muslim culture. You may wish to greet by saying “assalam alaikum” meaning “peace be upon you”. You can return a greeting with “wa alaikum assalam”. Understand that a handshake may also last a while, and be very sure to only offer your right hand.

Ensuring that you arrive on time for meetings is very important and a sign of respect. Though Middle Easterners tend to have a relaxed approach, they do expect westerners to be punctual. Take into consideration that the decision-making process will generally be slow.

Taking off your shoes has been a tradition of Islamic culture for many years. It shows respect for their homes and businesses and of course, keeps the floor clean.

In general, females would not be present at business meetings; however, there are times when female business associates are required to be present. In this case, you do not extend a hand unless they extend theirs first. In general, there is very little to no touching between men and women in Arab culture.

A meeting may seem rather hectic to a westerner. However, it is all part of the relationship-building process. Arab culture generally spends much time greeting and sharing small foods and drink, primarily all about developing trust. Enjoy getting to know your hosts and their business.

Prayer is a very important part of each day. During Adnan (call to prayer), which will be 5 times a day, it is respectful to reduce volumes or turn off the music. You will come to understand that mobile phones will still be used during meetings. However, should you have a loud ringtone, it is advisable to turn your phone to silent also.

Business cards are handed across with the right hand as the left hand in Muslim culture is seen to be the hand you cleanse your body with. This is the same for offering handshakes, gifts or simply passing food. It’s all done with the right hand.

You spend all day on your feet, collecting dirt. Be careful not to sit and point the soles of your shoes or feet towards others. This is a great sign of disrespect and is a common mistake of those that have not been careful to understand Arab culture better.

Business cards are all part of your first impression. Though not expected, it is much preferred to receive a white business card. Better still to have the cards printed with English on one side and Arabic on the other. Your first impression is key to a great start.

Majlis is a form of networking held by respected businessmen. The event generally takes place in their homes in one room where men sit and enjoy talking and eating around large tables, or sitting on the floor with the food presented on a long mat. If you are left-handed, do your very best to offer cards, food, and even eat with your right hand. Women may also have Majlis in another room in the absence of the men.

Though not expected, gifts are a nice way to greet others concerning their kind invitation to host you. Share small gifts that are more personal. Something in-line with the hosts interests and hobbies, or the business, is often a good idea. Be careful not to give gifts which may contain alcohol or pork products.

It is perfectly ok for western women to shake hands with Muslim women though, in general, they may not offer their hand. Therefore expect them to extend your hand first. When not shaking hands as a greeting, many women will simply give a small kiss on the left cheek.
